Boris Stoicheff built the first laser in Canada as a member of Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Herzberg's research group at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in Ottawa from 1951 to 1964.  He has also made significant contributions in Raman spectroscopy, stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy and generation of coherent short wavelength radiation. His most recent work on induced transparency in atomic hydrogen may lead to new uses for laser emissions.
