Have you ever had a negative experience on a social networking site?

There has been a lot of debate lately surrounding privacy concerns for users of social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.  What are your thoughts on this discussion?  Do you feel your privacy is comprised through the use of these sites?  Have you ever had a negative experience related to this issue?

I think that social networks such as myspace get a bad reputation. Social networks do have negative impacts on society and individuals but given the massive amount of interaction that takes place on the networks it's very uncommon. Many criminals have actually been caught, as a result of myspace investigations, charities have received exceptional public exposure on these networks. Companies and musician have recognized their dreams as a result of myspace marketing campaigns.

To avoid abuse, learn how your information is displayed. Is it available to everyone? Just who you decide? Is your information being sold to someone else? Be smart. Be aware.

This comes from first hand knowledge of being harassed by an online sexual predator - and I don't make these suggestions lightly. There are some real sicko's out there - be careful! Fake popularity of facebook isn't worth it.
