Is email a thing of the past?

Instant messaging and social networking sites provide a communication and messaging platform that is attracting larger numbers of users. Meanwhile, email inboxes fill with growing volumes of junk mail and fraudulent offers. What does the future hold for email?

Comments

No way is email a thing of the past. No everyone can be constantly available to respond to IM's, (which I find can be really irritating). Besides, email is the most convenient way to browse through who has been trying to get a hold of you and "screening" them. Better than snail mail and more convenient than a phone answering machine.

I don't think so either - I find that IM and things like facebook are good for staying in touch with people but it is much more informal... if you have something important and it has to be done over the internet an email is certainly the most acceptable way to do so. Plus it is more universal (although this is changing)... it is reasonable for a student to email a prof/teacher a question and most parents have email addresses at least for work but those people may not want to be associated with one another on msn or facebook!!

Definitely not! I receive dozens of emails in a day.
