Should Western do research supporting the military?

Comments

Snx for you job!
It has very much helped me!

I believe, with regards to the issue of military related research, Western must maintain and emphasize academic freedom. From an ethical stance, I personally cannot see the logic behind putting a stop to such research aside from anti-military views held by individuals. While individuals should certainly speak out about these opinions, ethical review boards must use logic and reason as their key guiding principles. Especially considering that Canada's military most often plays a peace-keeping role, and also considering that military is necessary in any country, I don't see why Western should back away from research that supports the military. I entirely agree that the issue of Western partly funding a genocide and one of the world's worst humanitarian crises in Sudan is much more important than military related research.

I want to know more about the below comment.

It is a debatable question of ethics regarding whether Western should support military research. However, there is a more worrisome ethical question to be asked of the students. It has been brought to my attention that the University through its Operation and Endowment fund is invested in several "worst offender" companies that are supporting the Government of Sudan. The Government of Sudan has been actively involved in carrying out a genocide where over 200,000-400,000 people have been murdered and over 2.5 million people displaced. I find the fact that Western is playing a role in genocide to be very disturbing, and thus, your question regarding military research is probably not as morally relevant in light of the current financial practices of this university. What I find even more disturbing is that this issue was brought forth to the Board of Governors two years ago, and they refused to divest from these companies. The ethics of the situation in Darfur are black and white compared to the military research question posed.
