Should cigarettes be sold on campus?

Comments

This topic is difficult to debate. Though some of us bring out the argument of killing and harmful to our health, who has the right to hurt others, who is the one providing the service making the profit off of the harmful substance. From alcohol to cigarettes, the government has the final say on the topic. The only way cigarettes should be banned on campus, is if it is banned Federally or Provincially. Look at the Prohibition movement in early 20th century. What came out of the movement, ignorance? gansters? Overall diffusion of the ban, and we still have alcohol today. Thus, there's really no local decision that can affect the sale of cigarettes as it is possible to go elsewhere, and with rising "rollies" from reserves, the government question should be brought into the mix.

Of course they should be sold on campus. Sure, cigarettes aren't that great for health--but neither is alcohol, and it's sold at school. It isn't up to the university to tell students how to cope with the stress of university life. Furthermore, Mustang Alley (the only store on campus that sells cigarettes) has a ridiculous policy on selling cigarettes--for example, they will not accept Ontario photo health cards, or out of province identification. This store should be shut down, and the management fired for the discriminatory policies.

No, I do not believe cigarettes should be sold on campus. They kill, they destroy lives, they hurt innocent people including children. Cigarettes should be outright banned preferably, but since that's not going to happen anytime soon, the least we can do is make it shameful for people to smoke; make it unacceptable behaviour, especially around children. To sell it on campus is to endorse it. You may as well sell guns. I just quit smoking about 2 months ago, after many many tries. I know from experience if the product is not readily available, I buy less cigarettes thus smoke less cigarettes.
