APPLICATION PACKAGE

I) SUMMARY
The U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce offers unique Internship Program opportunities which are open throughout this year at our five offices across Canada (in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Montreal and Vancouver), starting as early as March 3rd through to December 19th, 2008! Internships can be arranged for a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months depending upon availability.
Interns will gain valuable experience in a progressive work environment and quickly become familiar with the dynamic field of international trade. Positions are voluntary (i.e. financial remuneration is not offered). It is a forty hour workweek. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution at the time of application,
or as recent graduates who are seeking business experience prior to gaining permanent employment. Program is open only to American and Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents/Landed Immigrants in
Canada. Each intern will receive a letter of referral based upon performance at completion of the program.

POSITION DESCRIPTION 
Interns receive on-the-job training, working on a variety of projects relating to U.S./Canada trade development: recruiting and promoting U.S. exhibitor companies for trade events; assisting with logistical preparations for U.S. Department of Commerce trade delegations and trade missions being hosted in Canada; scheduling one-on-one appointments with U.S. and Canadian firms; participating in trade outreach webinars and seminars; drafting replies to correspondence on related projects; and conducting market research and preparing reports. Interns’ work assignments shall be in the public interest and, to the maximum extent possible, provide an appropriate and rewarding educational experience.

IV) APPLICATION PACKAGE
Must include a cover letter, resume and writing sample.

1. Cover Letter should include the following elements:
Why you want to be an intern, what you have to offer and what you hope to learn from the internship. Please confirm the cities which appeal to you, i.e.,
Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa,Vancouver,Montreal;
your dates of availability;
and if you require help finding inexpensive lodgings in these cities. 

2. Resume should include the following elements:
Future goals, computer skills, past experience, including academic accomplishments.

3. Writing Sample should include the following elements:
Displays your market research skills and your caliber of writing style. It can be a recent report that you have already written. Short business and market research papers are preferred. Do not submit group work projects.
