I cannot believe I’m already halfway done university. It feels like just yesterday that I was a frosh getting ready for O-Week. Western has been an incredible experience so far; never a dull moment. Between getting involved in clubs, prepping for exams, hanging out on Richmond Row, catching a few Mustangs games, and Homecoming (just to name a few things), there’s barely any time to breathe. But that’s what makes Western so exciting. There’s always something going on and it most definitely keeps you busy (busy in a good way)! Combine amazing people, great faculty, and a lively campus and you have yourself an absolutely unforgettable experience.
It’s very easy to get overwhelmed among all the excitement. The key to dealing with that is balance. I think of life kind of like a pie; you get to split that pie any way you like and allocate it to things like friends, academics, extracurricular activities, etc. You’ll learn very quickly that in life, diversification is a great strategy. Whether you’re investing in stocks, deciding which courses to take, or expanding your shoe collection, diversifying is very important. Too much pie in one place narrows your perspective and limits your potential for development.
Western has the best resources to help you make sure that you’re achieving the balance that you want. Sophs and Residence Advisors will prove to be excellent mentors for you. The great thing about Western is that you get to meet so many people. You’ll meet people in the same program as you, people with the same interests as you, people from your hometown, and so it’s easy to find people to relate to. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! There are so many people who have been in your shoes and their advice is always helpful.
Overall, just enjoy your experience at Western. Take advantage of opportunities, get involved, and find a balance that you’re happy with.
Take a deep breath and get ready for the best years of your life.
