GRADUATE STUDIES 9500: THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF UNIVERSITY TEACHING (GS 9500) is an interdisciplinary, graduate credit course offered jointly by SGPS and the TSC.
The goals of the course are to:
- familiarize students with research and theory relevant to university teaching
- provide an opportunity for feedback on basic teaching skills.
During the course, you will have a chance to work with graduate students from across campus and learn from a teaching team of instructors and researchers from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.
Students are expected to actively participate in class meetings through discussions and video-recorded microteaching sessions. Although the course will appear on the student’s transcript, grades (pass/fail) will not affect the student’s academic average.
COURSE DATES
September 14 to December 9, 2015
Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Teaching Support Centre, Room 122, Weldon Library

- GS 9500 is only open to current Western graduate students.
- This course is best suited to those with some previous university teaching experience.
- GS 9500 is also a component of the Western Certificate in University Teaching. Assignments completed for the course help students make significant progress on the written projects required for the Certificate.
