DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
Research Seminar Series
The Bruce McCaffrey Memorial Graduate Seminar Series
The History Department enjoys a vibrant graduate student culture, which has been energized by various students over the years. Bruce McCaffrey died in August 2002 of lung cancer just days after completing his major M.A. research paper and graduated posthumously in October 2002. In memory of his spirit and enthusiasm for history, the seminar series continues to support historical research and graduate interchange.
Professional Development Workshops
Formal training as a historian takes place in classes and seminars, writing a cognate paper, taking comprehensive exams, and producing a doctoral dissertation. However, there are other facets to an academic career, including public speaking, networking, effective writing, publishing, applying for grants, and teaching. These are not always addressed directly or explicitly in a student's formal studies. The purpose of these workshops is to help students prepare for the 'other' many and varied parts of an academic career (as well as careers outside academe).
The workshops will take up questions of immediate relevance to students, including applying for grants. The sessions will be led by students and faculty, followed by discussion.
