Dr. Ryan Samaroo got a PhD in Philosophy from Western in 2013; his focus here was on the foundations of modern physics. After leaving Western, he was a SSHRC postdoc in the philosophy department at the University of Bristol, where he was cross-appointed in the physics department; after that, he was Waynflete Academic at Oxford; later he became Associate Faculty at Oxford.
Ryan moved back to Canada in 2018.
By then, he was looking to leave higher education and started working with the Government of Canada in 2018. He is currently Senior Policy Advisor to the Chief Data Officer of the Department of Employment and Social Development Canada. In this capacity, he gives advice on developing the evidence base that supports strategic planning in the areas of labour market economics, workforce development, and income security. He is proud to be part of the federal government's economic response strategy to support Canadians affected by COVID-19.
Ryan's current work lies at the intersection of federal policy-making, corporate strategy, management consulting, and "tech", and he is offering a perspective on all these areas. His office is not far from parliament, but now he works in a corner of his attic.
