About the Talk
In this one-hour workshop participants will:
- learn how to anticipate and recognize signs of mental health issues and illness.
- discuss strategies for promoting positive mental health and coping with mental health issues, such as mindfulness.
- participate in a mindfulness practice in-session.
- explore ways for students to communicate about their mental health with their supervisors, and for faculty and staff to best support their students who may be struggling.
Presenter Bio
Dr. Arlene MacDougall is a psychiatrist, Assistant Professor and the Director of Research for the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University with a cross-appointment to the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics. She is also the Director of Research and Innovation for Mental Health Care at St. Joseph’s Health Care London.
Dr. MacDougall has led the development of transformative system initiatives for mental health including the Global MINDS @ Western, the Collaborative Care Network Initiative for Western Ontario Health (Middlesex London), the MINDS of London-Middlesex - Canada’s first social innovation lab to tackle complex community mental health system challenges starting with transitional aged youth mental health; and Biigajiiskaan: Indigenous Pathways to Mental Wellness - a reconciliation initiative to create a wholistic wellness service that integrates the best practices of psychiatric care with the wise practices of Indigenous Knowledge and Healing. She also studies the use of mindfulness meditation, social entrepreneurism coupled with psychosocial rehabilitation, creative arts and participatory video in promoting recovery from mental illness.
Dr. MacDougall is the founder and president/CEO of the Global MINDS Collective social enterprise which catalyzes mindful social innovations for global mental Health and wellbeing. She has been recognized as a Global Young Physician Leader by the international Inter-Academy Partnership.
