EnviroCon 2022 Call for Abstracts | Deadline March 4, 2022

Western University invites graduate students to submit abstracts for presentations and speed talks for the 2022 EnviroCon research conference.

EnviroCon is an annual interdisciplinary conference organized by the Centre for Environment and Sustainability. We welcome students from all departments, including Science, Engineering, Social Sciences, Business, Policy, and Management.

The conference will take place on March 25, 2022, and there are no fees associated with this event.

To submit an abstract (max 300 words), please use our abstract submission form.

Submission Deadline: March 4, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. EST.  Successful applicants will be notified by March 11, 2022.

About the Talk
Our community is becoming increasingly aware of the inequities that exist for underrepresented groups like women, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC), people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, and others. It is our common responsibility as researchers and members of the university to ensure that we create inclusive and supportive spaced, facilitating participation from these groups, to ensure all can thrive.

Dr. Levine will cover basic concepts of EDID, and go through some key principles and best practices of equity and inclusion, and how these can be applied in our research environment. We will also speak about how each and every one of us can be a transformative leader, with the ability to create a brave and inclusive space for all.

Presenter Bio
Dr. Alex Levine (she/her) is a behavioural neuroscientist turned equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization (EDID) coordinator at Western. Alex brings a unique perspective to this work, identifying as gay and Jewish and having lived in four different countries, before moving to Turtle Island 4 years ago. She is on a mission to bring EDID education to the academy, and challenge the ways in which our learning and research spaces tend to center members of overprivileged groups.

Graduate Students! Satisfied with Your Program? Western Wants to Know

The Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS), which is administered every three years, is the largest graduate student survey of its kind in Canada. It is designed to provide universities with information regarding the quality of their graduate programs as assessed by their own graduate students.

Western has participated in each administration of the CGPSS, starting with the pilot project in 2005. For 2022, graduate students at over 50 universities across Canada will take part. The results will generate a national understanding of students’ views about their graduate education.

We openly acknowledge that this continues to be a difficult time for many members of our community – as such, the decision for Western to participate in the survey this year was not an easy one. Given that other institutions across the country are moving forward with the survey, we did not feel it was appropriate to deprive our students of this mechanism to provide their feedback.

The survey is confidential. It will take approximately 25 minutes to complete, and can be saved and completed in more than one sitting. The survey is also intended for graduate degree students only (not diploma, exchange or visiting students).

Participation in this survey is voluntary, and students may refuse to participate or withdraw at any time.

The survey launches on February 14 and will run until March 14.  Graduate students will receive an email to participate from [email protected].

Western Libraries, in partnership with the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Information Technology Resource Centre (ITRC) and Western Research’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team, is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Open Educational Resources Grant and Support Program.

What is it?
Instructors who want to create, adapt, or adopt an open educational resource (OER) for use in one or more courses in 2023-24 can now apply for up to $7,500 in grant funding plus in-kind supports.

Who can apply? 
Western instructors, including instructors of co-curricular learning opportunities.

March 13 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Jennifer Wemigwans, PhD, is from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, Canada. She is a new media producer, writer and scholar specializing in the convergence between education, Indigenous knowledge and new media technologies. Her book A Digital Bundle: Protecting and Promoting Indigenous Knowledge Online (2018) explores the prospects of education and digital projects in a networked world.  

Dr. Wemigwans takes pride in working to invert the conventional use of media by revealing the potential for Indigenous cultural expression and Indigenous knowledge through new technologies, education and the arts.

Jennifer Walker is a Haudenosaunee member of Six Nations of the Grand River with a PhD in Community Health Services (Epidemiology) from the University of Calgary. She is an Associate Professor at McMaster University in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, & Impact. Dr. Walker’s work focuses largely on Indigenous community-engaged health research using large health services databases through her work as a Core Scientist and Indigenous Health Lead at ICES in Ontario and through the Health Data Research Network Canada.

Dr. Walker has an active research community-engaged research program in aging and dementia. She is the co-lead of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration and Aging’s (CCNA) Team 18 – Issues in Dementia Care for Indigenous Populations and the lead for the Indigenous Cognitive Health Program. She has also led the validation of the Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment tool and the implementation of the tool in Anishinabek communities of Northern Ontario.Dr. Walker has an active research community-engaged research program in aging and dementia. Indigenous Peoples have the right to control the collection, ownership, dissemination and use of their data. This includes the right to utilize Indigenous data in ways that are reflective and respectful of Indigenous worldviews and research paradigms. By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to consider Indigenous perspectives and the impact of colonization on Indigenous Peoples’ health, describe key Indigenous data governance principles to support Indigenous research practices, and highlight examples of ethical research relationships with Indigenous partners.
