SOCIOLOGY COLLOQUIUM: From Contest Mobility to… Predictable Stability? The Micro-Foundations of Upper-Middle-Class Parenting | March 26, 2021

Janice D. Aurini is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo. She completed her PhD at McMaster University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. Her research examines education policy, education inequality, private education, and parenting. Her recent articles can be found in Sociology of Education, Canadian Public Policy, Qualitative Research, and the European Journal of Higher Education.

Drawing on interviews with upper-middle-class parents in Boston, Massachusetts, this presentation examines how “predictable stability” informs their assessment of downward mobility risks for their children. In contrast to anxiety and a ‘fear of falling,’ multigenerational achievement within contest mobility systems allows these parents to assume that their children will realize education and career success and a comfortable standard of living. At the same time, these expressions of ease do not capture how they actively fortify their children’s social class position through a variety of investments and strategies. This analysis extends contemporary theories of parenting and social stratification by illustrating variation among upper-middle-class dispositions and the micro-foundations that underlie quantitative research on the “stickiness” of intergenerational status mobility and the “glass floor” that protects upper-middle-class children from experiencing downward mobility.

FREE Virtual Conference: "Stay in the Game" Pathways for Women in Sport | March 27, 2021

"Stay in the Game" is a one-day virtual conference aimed at promoting the continued involvement of women in sport beyond graduation in a variety of roles.
The conference is free, but registration is required.

The conference features Keynote Speaker Jayna Hefford, a multi-time women's hockey medal winner at the Winter Olympics and IIHF World Women's Championships as well as two panels of women who continue to be involved in sport locally, nationally and internationally as coaches, board members, administrators, journalists, and officials.

These role models for women in sport will share insight to why they chose this path, and the benefits and challenges of remaining involved in sport, through their personal experiences and stories.

Breakout sessions will cover a range of topics pertaining to women working, volunteering, and continuing to compete in sport, including: athlete identity and transitioning to a different role, work-life balance, building confidence, dealing with conflict, mental health and self-care, leadership, women on sport boards, professional development, and safe sport.

The conference will give young women and their mentors an opportunity to explore further the many ways they can continue to be involved in the sport world.

SOCIOLOGY COLLOQUIUM: Anger, psychic institutional pain and silencing in academia | February 26, 2021

Shirley Anne Tate is Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier 1 in Feminism and Intersectionality based in the Sociology Department, University of Alberta, Canada. Her area of research is Black Diaspora Studies focusing on institutional racism, decoloniality, bodies and mixed race.

Her abstract: “I am a ‘wounded body stranger’ (Tate and Wahidin 2014) removed from myself so I do not feel psychic pain. However, pain emerges and I use it here drawing from Audre Lorde’s The Cancer Journals as an analytic frame to explore how as Black women we cope with an imposed silencing from within white feminism whilst maintaining subjective and Black feminist community cohesiveness. I look at psychic institutional pain in UK universities as locations of body and knowledge estrangement drawing on Toni Morrison’s Playing in the Dark and such pain is seen as both repressive and productive of Black feminist critique. Institutional pain can also be agentic, productive, when we notice that it is rooted in Lorde’s anger. ‘Mi vex’ recognizes the source of vexation, of Black feminist anger-pain, while repeating it as complaint and need for intersectional political action in order to continue to build Black feminist community.”

REGISTER NOW: International Day of Women and Girls in Science Symposium | February 11, 2021

This year’s celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science will address the theme “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19”, and gather experts working in fields related to the pandemic from different parts of the world.

Since its establishment by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 2015, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science aims at raising awareness on the issue celebrating women’s excellence in science and reminding the international community that science and gender equality have to advance hand-in-hand to address major global challenges and achieve all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the critical role of women researchers in different stages of the fight against COVID-19, from advancing the knowledge on the virus to developing technics for testing and finally the vaccine against the virus.

At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic also had a significant negative impact on woman scientists, particularly affecting those at early-career stages, and thus contributing to widening the existing gender gap in science, and revealing the gender disparities in the scientific system, which need to be addressed by new policies, initiatives and mechanisms to support woman and girls in science.

In this framework, this year’s celebration of the Day will address the theme “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19”, and gather experts working in fields related to the pandemic from different parts of the world.  The event will take place online, on Zoom platform. A simultaneous interpretation of the debates will be provided in English and French

CALL FOR SPEAKERS

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) is excited to announce that it will host its 58th Annual Conference in a virtual format from February 1-5, 2021. The title of this year’s conference – Learning from the Present: Transforming Graduate Education Post-Pandemic – reflects both the challenges and opportunities of our times. 

For nearly sixty years deans, associate deans, administrators, faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students have gathered at our annual conference to learn and share ideas about the future of graduate education in Canada. Despite the immense difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, CAGS is committed to continuing this longstanding tradition.

The 58th Annual CAGS Conference will include all of the elements typically featured at our in-person conference, as well as some new opportunities to share, learn, and connect with colleagues and friends. We are excited to leverage a sophisticated virtual platform to offer an expanded slate of workshops, panel presentations, and keynote addresses, as well as award ceremonies, special guest speakers, and interactive social events. The conference will bring together a diverse community of stakeholders from across Canada who share an interest in graduate education. The conference will be offered in both French and English, and each event will feature integrated remote simultaneous interpretation.

CAGS is currently accepting proposals for speakers and panel sessions to be presented at the 58th Annual Conference. We invite the submission of proposals in English and in French from researchers, administrators, faculty members, deans, and associate deans from CAGS member institutions, and are especially welcoming of proposals submitted by graduate students. Proposals for individual presentations as well as pre-formed panels of 3-5 speakers will be accepted for consideration.

Topics of discussion should relate to the conference themes of learning and transforming, and may include:

• Adaptation, resiliency, and perseverance
• Reimagining graduate education
• Transforming academic culture
• Mental health and wellbeing
• Inclusion, diversity, and equity
• Anti-black racism and racial equality
• Indigenization of the academy and support for Indigenous students
• Graduate supervision and mentorship
• Broadening perspectives on dissertations and the PhD
• Career awareness and professional development

Proposals from individual speakers and pre-formed panel sessions should include a working title, a brief description of the aims and goals of the presentation, and the name(s) and affiliations of the proposed speaker(s). REGISTER NOW: CAGS Virtual Symposia, November 24-27, 2020

Building on the success of its summer webinar series, CAGS is pleased to announce its newest online event – the 2020 CAGS Virtual Symposia, to be held from November 24-27, 2020. This free, week-long event will feature four unique webinars on some of the most pressing issues facing graduate education in Canada, including mental health and wellness, remote graduate supervision, adapting to the new normal, anti-black racism, and inclusion.

The 2020 CAGS Virtual Symposia will be conducted using the Zoom video conference platform. The webinars are free of charge and registration is open to all deans, associate deans, faculty members, administrators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. The webinars will be presented in English, and French interpretation will be provided simultaneously through a third-party service.

The annual SCAN Health Virtual Business Case Competition is a virtual, international competition in partnership with HIMSS and proudly hosted by the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor in Canada for undergraduate and graduate students from business schools.

The competition provides students from around the world an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, skills and innovative solutions to advance supply chain and logistics in the health sector.

This year’s competition focuses on supply chain challenges of sourcing personal protective equipment to protect patients and health workers during COVID-19.

Participating students will take the role of a consulting team advising the Government of Canada on the development of a coordinated healthcare supply chain. The Business Case will be made available to all registrants during Round 1 on November 9, 2020.

Teams will have the opportunity to win cash prizes, gain international expert input on their solutions from the judging panel and present at HIMSS21 Global Health Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas.
