The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies extends a warm welcome to all our new students starting on campus this week.

Yesterday's Graduate Student Orientation was a phenomenal success as we hosted 1,000 new Master's and doctoral students who have started in more than 50 graduate programs across campus.

International Students and Family Drive -- Please DONATE Today!

Brought to you by the Society of Graduate Students:

The International Students and Family Drive begins July 27 and runs until August 27.

We are collecting household items to donate to the Platts Lane Community, and to the incoming International Graduate students. Throughout the next four weeks, we invite you to drop off your household items to the front desk at the SGPS office located in the International and Graduate Affairs Building Room 1N07.

Bring in your item and place a sticky note with your faculty name on it because THE GRADUATE DEPARTMENT WITH THE MOST ITEMS DONATED IS IN FOR A GREAT TREAT.

Examples of items you can donate (All items will be checked before donated):

• Iron
• Kettle
• Blender
• Toaster
• Vacuum Cleaner
• Toaster Oven
• Snow shovels
• Car snow cleaners
• Desk lamps
• Chairs
• Pots and pans
• Many more...

... AND we are hoping to collect children's toys, activities and books.

(Please note that any donated electronics must be working and in good condition.)

Please support your fellow graduate students this summer as you do your summer cleaning or are planning on moving. We really appreciate your help and don't forget to encourage all of your faculty members to get involved.

This is a FREE event offered exclusively to Western's graduate community.

This special program is offered by St. John Ambulance where volunteers bring their therapy dogs in to help relieve stress and/or loneliness. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to come in and pet them, learn about the dogs, and learn more about the Therapy Dog program.

International Students: Remember to Renew Your Study Permits!

Please remember to renew your Study Permit in advance of the expiration date to avoid interruption in your registration at Western.

Those students whose Study Permits expire before June 1, 2015 must present proof of having applied for a Study Permit renewal or a renewed Permit to the SGPS office in order to be registered for the summer 2015 term.

Thesis Defense Only (TDO) Status

Thesis Defense Only status is available for the summer term to those students who have completed all non-thesis program requirements, plus submission of the exam copy of the thesis by the published deadlines (March 19 for PhD, April 2 for master’s), but are unable to defend the thesis before the end of term.

Those who meet eligibility criteria will be contacted individually by SGPS; students do not need to submit a request for TDO status.
