2015 Brazil Scholarship Program: Deadline Extended until July 29!

Only eight days left until the new extended application deadline of July 29, 2015!  

More than 700 OAS-GCUB Scholarships (http://www.oas.org/en/scholarships/brazil.asp) are available to students in Canada and around the world to pursue a two-year master’s or a four-year doctoral program in Brazil.

Participating Brazilian Universities

The Scholarships, offered by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities (GCUB), offer very generous support including:

• full tuition waiver
• monthly living allowance
• Portuguese language support (proficiency is not required at the time of application)
• And, for the first 100 selected candidates, a one-time $1,200 (USD) grant for accommodation expenses

International Students: Renew Your Study Permits Today!

Please remember to renew your Study Permit in advance of the expiration date to avoid interruption in your registration at Western.

Those students whose Study Permits expire before October 1, 2015 must present proof of having applied for a Study Permit renewal or a renewed Permit to the SGPS office in order to be registered for the fall 2015 term.

NEW DEADLINE for “Thesis Defense Only” Status

Effective immediately, all students who submit their examination-ready thesis (supported by their supervisor and/or program) by the final official day of term will be eligible for Thesis Defense Only (TDO) registration in the following term.

In the event that the thesis examination leads to a requirement for revisions that cannot be completed within the TDO term, the student will be required to pay part-time tuition fees for the TDO term and continue regular registration in the term in which the revisions are completed and submitted.

To facilitate the status change for students who anticipate submitting their examination-ready thesis by the final official day of term, we have created a form that students and supervisors will need to submit to SGPS indicating their intent to submit the thesis by the end of term, with their exam in the following term.

Dr. Aydin Behnad wins Postdoctoral Fellow of the Year Award

Electrical and Computer Engineering’s (ECE), Dr. Aydin Behnad, is the recipient of the 2015 Postdoctoral Fellow of the Year Award.

The Postdoctoral Fellow of the Year Award is presented to a postdoctoral fellow who has shown exceptional commitment and potential as an emerging scientist. Recipients should stand out among their peers for excellence displayed in research, leadership, service, outreach and teaching.

The award was presented at the Postdoctoral Research Forum held at Western on May 7.

SOGS Extended Health and Dental Plan

Full-time graduate students who are SOGS members are automatically enrolled in the SOGS extended health and dental plan. New students starting in May will be assessed their pro-rated premium. If a new student wishes to opt-out, or opt-in family members, they must do so by May  31, 2015.

New part-time students are not automatically enrolled in the plan but are eligible to opt-in at SOGS, UCC 260. The deadline for coverage for the 2014-2015 academic year is May 31, 2015.

Pick Up Your Bus Pass Today

Full-time graduate students in SOGS-eligible programs are able to pick up the SOGS bus pass starting today in room 260, UCC. To pick up your pass you will need your student card, and you must be registered as a full-time student for the summer 2015 term.

Deferred Payment Charge

The deferred payment charge for those graduate students paying in installments is no longer applicable. Graduate students still have the option of paying in two equal installments, but will not be subject to an additional fee.
