Mitacs is now accepting applications for competitive international research opportunities, including student travel to and from Canada.

For Students in Canada to do Research Abroad

Globalink Research Award – MHRD India


• Open to senior undergraduate and graduate students
• 12-week projects at one of seven Indian Institutes of Technology
• $5,000 award and a local grant equivalent to $5,000


Globalink Research Award – Inria
Open to graduate students

• 12- to 24-week projects at an Inria Research Centre in France
• $5,000 award and a monthly stipend


Globalink Research Award – MHESR Tunisia


• Open to senior undergraduates and graduate students
• 12- to 24-week projects at accredited universities in Tunisia
• $7,000 award   


For Students in France to do Research in Canada

Globalink Research Award – Inria


• Open to PhD students at Inria Research Centres in France
• 12- to 24-week research projects at Canadian universities
• $5,000 award, a PhD stipend, and airfare

Graduate Student Bus Passes Available December 15, 2015

Full-time graduate students in SOGS-eligible programs are able to pick up the SOGS bus pass starting tomorrow, December 15, 2015, in room 260, UCC. To pick up your pass you will need your student card, and you must be registered as a full-time student for the winter 2016 term.

SSHRC Recipients: Tell Your Story to WIN $3,000!

SSHRC’s annual Storytellers Contest challenges students to show Canadians how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better. SSHRC is looking for storytellers and data journalists, social media masters and aspiring filmmakers.

Your challenge? In three minutes or 300 words, tell Canadians about a great SSHRC-funded project happening at Western. Be bold, clever, inventive, funny, moving, inspirational and educational. This is research for a better life.

Submission period: January 5, 2016 to January 29, 2016.

An expert panel of communications professionals will pick the 25 best entries. These Top 25 Storytellers will each receive a cash prize of $3,000, a spot in SSHRC's exclusive research communications master class at Congress 2015 (registration and three nights’ accommodation included), national promotion of their project and the chance to present their work at the Storytellers Showcase.  The master class workshop features mentoring and training from experienced communications professionals, as well as specialized group sessions to help the Top 25 polish their presentations. At the Storytellers Showcase, as part of Congress 2016, the Top 25 will take the stage and deliver their pitches in front of a live audience.

SCHOLARS TO LEADERS Speaker Series — THE SOCIAL SCIENCE & HUMANITIES TOOLKIT FOR ACADEMIA AND BEYOND

Andrew Nelson, ADR Social Science, Bioarchaeologist and Professor of Anthropology, will be speaking next Wednesday, November 25 at 12:30 p.m. in the IGAB Atrium about The Social Science & Humanities Toolkit for Academia and Beyond.

The Scholars to Leaders Series is a unique initiative of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) that is open to all students and scholars across all careers at Western – undergraduate, graduate, professional, and postdoctoral. This guest speaker Series brings everyone together once a month to listen to academic and private-sector professionals share valuable insight and expertise on critical aspects of leadership from their own career experiences.

Monthly meetings run from September to April, except December, and are held on the last Wednesday of every month in the International and Graduate Affairs Building (IGAB) Atrium. Pizza is available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

International Scientific Experiences: Hosted by the Faculty of Science

As part of Western International Week, Science grad students will come together on Tuesday, November 17 to present short talks on their international science experience. The event will be held in AHB 1B02 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All are welcome to attend.
